. president obama and mitt romney right now getting set for decision 2012 and their very first presidential debates. >> both candidates taking time off from their public appearances to hone in on those talking points for tomorrow's debate in denver. >> while they're ready to talk to each other, they're also focusing their message on what they want to send out to the undecided voters. >> brian mooar joins us live from washington with more on the story. good morning, brian. >> reporter: it is crunch time now. voters are actually starting to go to the polls in some of these key states. early balloting starts today in the all-important swing state of ohio and really the candidates are hoping to do two things. they're hoping to score some points on the other guy but also avoid those gotcha moments, those just subtle phrases or a sigh or weird body english that could just decide which way one voter or another is going to fall in one of those key states. well, the candidates have been preparing, preparing, preparing, getting their messages honed down to a fine edge. here is how they want tomorrow

's absolutely right. these numbers not only don't add up, but if romney is ever forced to specify any of these deductions, what about home interest mortgage, what about state and local taxes? i mean, that would be a massive body blow to the middle class families of this country. >> let me say i'm very glad you played that clip from president bush for the following reason. we talk about something where i work at the center on budget called the tax reform trap. and here's how it goes. a candidate says i'm going to lower the tax rates but i'm going to broaden the tax base. what you get is lower rates, you get a lot of the former, you get very little of the latter. because like bob says, once you start going into how you're going to broaden the base, then it's don't look at me, look at the other guy. so the danger of this tax reform trap that governor romney is trying to sell right now is that you're going to end up with massively lower tax rates and you're not going to broaden the base much at all such that you'll have an explosive budget deficit, it's very much what we saw in the bush s

of. all of a sudden the guy is in worse shape. that's why they won't do it, right? romney won't tell us what he's getting rid of it because if he's getting rid of it, he's killing charitable organizations that need the money from charity. you start capping that, start messing around with people's mortgages, the one thing they need to build up some capital and personal worth. you mess with state and local. are you supposed to move if you live in new york or a high tax state like massachusetts, you're supposed to move because romney got elected? >> listen, his tax cut plan is going to slam about 68% of the american people, not 47% of the american people. he can't provide real details. you could close every single loophole that benefits the wealthy and just close it for the wealthy and it wouldn't pay for a fraction of the tax cut he's giving the wealthy. >> because they're still getting ahead. >> reducing capital gains to zero which means romney would pay virtually zero taxes. he's going to come back and say i want to work this out with the congress. well, i just don't think the countr

? apparently not. chris christie is right about one thing though. mitt romney must accomplish a lot on wednesday night to begin to alter this race across the board. romney's team is loading him up with a bunch of zingers for the debate according to to "the new york times." romney has memorized these zingers and has been practicing them on aids since august. romney obviously did well enough in the primary debates to make it this far, no doubt. although most of his competition wasn't as tough as president obama. romney also had some memorable moments. >> i'll tell you what. $10,000 bet? >> i'm not in the betting business. >> the answer is self-deportation, which is people decide they can do better by going home because they can't find work here because they don't have legal departmentation to allow them to work here. >> i can't have illegals. rick, i'm speaking. i'm speaking. you get 30 seconds. this is the way the rules work here is i get 60 seconds. and then you get 30 seconds to respond, right? >> well, let's bring in democratic strategist chris ko kn kofinis and susan del percio.

race is right now. guest: mitt romney is looking very good peer that is why in the obama administration did not want to run against mitt romney. he was the most threatening of the candidates. it is very hard to take on an incumbent. it has only happened -- republicans have only done at one time in the last few years. is in the last time it happened when clinton took out bush? it is curious, for example, there were 70 million viewers of that debate the other night, the highest it has been since 1992, the last time an incumbent was taken out. that is because people are uncomfortable with obama, but if they are not political knocks, like we are, they have not been paying attention, or have not been watching the debates and the just want to see who the challenger is and whether they are comparable with him. after monday night, everybody is pretty comfortable with mitt romney. >> i was reading back on your twitter feed. back in february you were saying conservatives should support mitt romney. is that because of the field or because of his conservative credentials? i was reading>> i was tota
